Kiwanis Announcements: Dave Hemstreet briefly told us for those of you who did not get Martha's email notice, that Bob Berta passed away last Sunday after a heart attack on his boat he was preparing for Labor Day Weekend. Services will be in a week or two and we will let you know. Please keep Sue and their boys in your thoughts and prayers. President Martha Burns today presented a Distinguished Service Award (DSA) to the one and only Dick Barley! Dick is our treasurer and the Division 3 treasurer and keeper of the "Barley Path" and all around good guy-even Santa at our Christmas parties sometimes. This award gives Dick a plaque to hang on his wall and $150 was paid to the Cal-Nev-Ha District Foundation. Dick also picks up Dean Deardorff each week and does weekly food deliveries. Whew! Martha also sent around a clip board for signup for an interclub with the Montrose/LaCrescenta club - fun night out bowling October 11. To be held at the Montrose Bowl. Cost is $10 which pays for a ball, 2 shoes, and food. It looks like we may have a couple of teams. She read a thank you note from the Kiwanis Family House for the $620 portion that our club raised at the combined bar-b-q with Eagle Rock Club. Al Restivo from the Noon Club has invited us to participate in a 9/11 memorial on Saturday 9/11 at Memorial Park. It should be quite a gathering. Claire Slaughter says it is time to renew our Ralphs card on line. If you can't do it on line contact Claire and she will help. Phyllis Trueblood announced that the St. Francis Key club will be meeting soon to get its new year started. Frances Hill said The St. Bede Builders Club will have its first meeting of the new year Tuesday, Sept. 28. They will host the new pastor, Msgr. Antonio, and give him a briefing on what Buidlers Club is and does. A get well card went around for Marilyn Cable and Martha reminded us of our flu shots after the meeting. Also the noon Kiwanis Sept. 25, 3-6 p.m. Wine and Gourmet Tasting Event at Memorial Park for $50. Rosemary Hook put on each table a great little synopis of her take on Kiwanis International Convention recently in Reno. Hope you all had a chance to look at it.

Happy/Announcements/Miscellaneous/Sad Bucks (H.A.M.S.): Frances Hill put in $5 for the St Francis Key club who several years ago adopted an orphan as a project. It was quite the success and one of the priests stopped in to thank the Key Club. She was appreciative of Phyllis Trueblood who organized this project. Joyce Ruygrok gave $5 to report that former member Marilyn Wheeler is doing better and Jack is by her side 24/7. Joyce's grandson Brett (just turned professional golfer) entered a tournament, did well the first round and fell apart in the second but came home with $750. Tom Petersmeyer reported that today in the paper that Dr. Beeve received the Ellis Island Award. This award is only given to 100 people a year.

Program/Speaker: Tim Peters, Executive Director of Door of Hope. Before becoming executive director, Tim came out here from Kansas for a 3 month internship in the summer to help the homeless and never went back. He and his wife lived in downtown LA in skid row apartments to help the needy.
The Door of hope is a program of restoration for homeless families. (Our club delivers food there every Monday) They serve 165 individuals annually and 50 families with some 120 children. Tim told of one family with 2 children who came to the Door of Hope after moving from motel to motel, living out of their car. Coming to Door of Hope gave the children stability, the parents support and a home they needed to start rebuilding their lives. Learning how to handle their finances was a key to their journey of restoration, within weeks Anthony had found consistent full-time work, and Keysha completed her LVN degree. They are now self-sufficient, living in their own apartment, their kids are honor students in school and Keysha is actively involved in the PTA.
Tim left a wish list for the Door of Hope, from the list, it looks like they could use almost anything, from a refrigerator dolly to volunteers for teaching almost any classes. Good job Tim, come back again.
